Malcolm E. Barker
Malcolm E. Barker was born in London, England, and worked
as a newspaper reporter in Brighton before immigrating to
San Francisco in 1961. He soon became fascinated with that
city's history and, in 1984, founded Londonborn Publications
in order to write and produce Bummer & Lazarus: San
Francisco's Famous Dogs, the true story of two stray dogs
who roamed the streets in the 1860s.
Other books he has written and published are: Book design
& production for the small publisher (1990), San
Francisco Memoirs 1835-1851: Eyewitness accounts of the birth
of a city (1994); More San Francisco Memoirs: 1852-1899,
The ripening years (1996), and Three Fearful Days:
San Francisco memoirs of the 1906 earthquake & fire
(1998).
In 1991 Books Arts (San Francisco) published his Samuel
Brannan, San Francisco's Pioneer Printer.
As a public speaker he has delighted audiences with slide
presentations offering a unique insight into San Francisco's
colorful past. In 1999 he received the Oscar Lewis Award in
recognition of his contribution toward the preservation of
the city's history.
He became a U.S. citizen in 1983.
